I believe that's usually how it is at the Chasm as well. If I'm remembering correctly, they built temporary camps above ground... I'm not sure what it looks like once you get into the depths of it, though.

I've never been in the actual mines or anything on the island. But I did run around the old abandoned military school! That was fun.
